You landed a job interview — proof that your resume, experience and qualifications caught the attention of the employer. This means you are one step closer to getting hired and furthering your career trajectory.
But above the skills you can bring to the job, will you be a good fit for this organization? Aligning with a company’s corporate culture is just as important — if not more important — than applying your hard skills to succeed in the role, since it can have a huge impact on your happiness and overall job satisfaction.
So, during the interview, as the hiring manager/HR director will have questions for you, take the chance to ask them some important questions to get a feel for whether you’re a good fit for each other. It’ll show them you’re interested in the company and that you inhabit a deeper curiosity about their culture. And it can help you make an informed decision when (not if) you get that job offer.
Here’s what to ask:
“Can you tell me about your values and how they influence day-to-day operations?”
A company’s values are a reflection of what the organization considers to be important, and they play a crucial role in shaping its culture. The interviewer’s answer will ultimately give you a sense of what they stand for, how they operate, and whether they align with your values and beliefs.
For example, if a company values teamwork and collaboration, you can expect to work closely with your colleagues and be part of a supportive and inclusive environment. On the other hand, if a company values competitiveness and individual achievement, you can expect a more cutthroat environment where you’ll need to work independently to achieve success. And if that clashes with your style, this job might not last in the long run if you accept an offer.
How do the company’s values impact daily operations? If they value diversity and inclusion, you can ask about the company’s D&I initiatives, such as employee resource groups or diversity training programs. This will give you a better understanding of how the company commits to and follows through on its values, and how they influence the workplace culture.
“Can you tell me about your work-life balance policies?”
Work-life balance is a crucial aspect of a positive company culture, and it can have a huge impact on your overall job satisfaction. How does this company support employees in achieving a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives?
For example, you can ask about flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or hybrid schedules, and whether the company offers paid time off for personal or family-related issues. You can also ask about their approach to working overtime and whether they encourage employees to take breaks and avoid burnout.
Bear in mind that policies can vary greatly from company to company, so it’s imperative to find out what is offered and how it aligns with your own needs and expectations.
“Can you tell me about your growth and development opportunities for employees?”
Growth and development opportunities are crucial aspects of a positive company culture, as they allow employees to expand their skills and advance their careers. That’s why it’s important to ask about the company’s approach to employee development, including training and professional development programs, mentorship opportunities and opportunities for advancement.
What is the company’s approach to continued learning, i.e. offering training and development programs for employees, or providing opportunities for employees to attend conferences and workshops? Do they value career advancement and offer opportunities for employees to take on new responsibilities and advance their careers within the organization?
Find the Right Corporate Cultural Fit
